Scenes from Distant Times

I have long been interested in ancient scripts. Looking at ancient characters, I often sense how the lives and everyday experiences of people from those distant times became naturally embedded in written forms. Images of clouds, birds, insects, and rocks arise naturally in my imagination when I think of ancient scripts. They seem to belong to a world before writing took form—a moment when scenes from life were just about to become signs. Scenes from Distant Times is not intended to illustrate a particular story. It is a record of imagined scenes of life that may still linger within ancient characters, re-envisioned through signs and forms in ink. While Munja-do explores relationships and structures after the emergence of writing, Scenes from Distant Times imagines scenes and signs from the world before writing took form.

5. At the Door

Hangbak, Scenes from Distant Times — At the Door, 75 × 44 cm, ink and rubbing on hanji, 2025. A door is one of the oldest boundaries between inside and outside. This work imagines a moment in a distant time before writing, when a person stood at a doorway.
