나는 고전 서법의 원리를 오늘의 감각으로 다시 부르고자 한다.

이 작업에서 가장 중요한 것은 필묵법 자체의 특별함이다. 일반적으로 쓰는 붓보다 훨씬 큰 붓으로 한지에 쓰기 위해서는 강하고 진한 극농후(極濃厚) 묵법이 필수적이다. 그러나 농후한 먹은 한지에 쉽게 스며들지 않는다. 이를 가능하게 하는 특별한 필법이 동반되어야 한다. 극농후의 묵법을 쓰는 것, 추사 득의의 필묵법이다. 이러한 필법과 묵법의 조합은 단순한 기술이 아니라 화면 위에서 기세와 호흡을 형성하는 토대가 된다. 초서는 생략과 연결 속에서 기세와 호흡을 드러내는 하나의 생명체이며, 이번 작업은 그 생명력을 화면에 온전히 옮기려는 시도이다.

Artist Note – Hangbak Cursive Script (Choseo)

I reinterpret the principles of classical calligraphy through a contemporary sensibility.
The essence of this work lies in the distinct technique of brush and ink itself. Writing on hanji (traditional Korean paper) with a brush far larger than usual requires an extremely dense and powerful ink technique—what I call the “extremely concentrated ink method (極濃厚).” Yet such heavy ink does not easily permeate hanji; it demands a special brush technique that allows the ink to breathe with the paper. This combination of intense ink and precise brush control embodies Chusa’s most accomplished method of pil-muk (brush and ink). It is not mere technical mastery but the foundation upon which energy (氣勢) and breath emerge on the surface. Cursive script (Choseo) reveals itself through omission and connection—a living organism of flowing energy. This series seeks to bring that vitality fully onto the plane, allowing the movement of brush and ink to resonate as life itself.
