역사와 신화 : 항백

우리는 기록이 남아 있으면 그것을 역사라 부르고, 기록이 없으면 신화라 부른다. 그러나 기록의 유무가 존재의 유무를 결정하는가. 고대문자를 마주할 때마다 나는 그 문자를 만들기 직전의 삶을 떠올린다. 문자를 만들어낼 수 있었던 사회, 광대한 질서와 문화를 유지하던 시대의 기상이 작은 기호 속에 응축되어 있다. 그럼에도 기록이 충분히 남아 있지 않다는 이유로 어떤 시대는 점차 신화로 밀려나고, 허구로 취급된다. 이 작업은 그 이분법에 대한 질문에서 시작된다. 검은 막대기는 글자를 새기던 목간이다. 작은 필획들은 그 목간에서 빠져나온 문자들이다. 어떤 기록은 남았고, 어떤 기록은 매몰되었으며, 어떤 것은 사물의 내부에 저장되었다. 그러나 기록이 사라졌다고 해서 그 시대의 존재까지 사라지는 것은 아니다. 신화란 허구의 다른 이름이 아니라, 기록되지 못한 시간의 또 다른 형식일지도 모른다. 이 작업은 문자 이전의 삶과 기록 이후에 지워진 시간을 흑면과 문자층, 기물과 구조의 관계 속에서 다시 사유하려는 시도이다.

기록은 역사의 조건이 아니라 하나의 형식일 뿐이다.

History and Myth : Hangbak

We call it history when records remain. We call it myth when they do not. But does the presence of records determine the existence of what once was? Whenever I encounter ancient characters, I imagine the life that preceded their creation. The invention of writing presupposes a society capable of sustaining a vast cultural order. That magnitude of civilization is condensed within each small sign. Yet when sufficient records do not survive, entire eras are gradually pushed into the realm of myth and treated as fiction. This body of work begins with that question. The black vertical forms evoke inscription tablets used in early civilizations— the physical supports upon which writing was carved or brushed. The small brush marks drifting around them suggest traces of words— some preserved, some buried, some never fully secured. But the disappearance of records does not mean the disappearance of existence. Myth may not be the opposite of fact, but another form of time that was never fully recorded. Through layers of ink, buried characters, objects and structural relationships, this work reflects on life before writing and on time erased after it. A record is not the condition of history.

It is only one of its forms.
